The first reviews are in for the US X Factor and it seems the Americans much prefer Cheryl Cole to new judge Nicole Scherzinger, branding the Pussycat Doll nothing more than a 'seat warmer'.Although Girls Aloud singer Cheryl was axed from the show back in May - when SiCo felt she was ‘uncomfortable’ on the panel - she still appears in the opening episode which will air on UK TV tonight on ITV2.
One review read: ‘In the premiere Cheryl just kind of disappears mid show, without much explanation, and suddenly Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls is in her chair.’In TV’s not so olden days, such a performer would have been removed from the stage and certainly edited from the show tape. The live audience seemed appalled by the act. We were warned that the American version of X Factor would be brasher but this was plain indecent. Cheryl Cole may have been grateful that she was replaced as a judge prior to this vulgarity. When she joined the U.K. version in 2008 fresh from her split from footballer Ashley Cole, she immediately became a television darling who was sassy, sharp and sparkling onscreen.
Her chemistry with Cowell was undeniable, and he unapologetically made her his favourite on the panel, which then included Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh.
But her charisma and well, x factor, didn't seem to follow when she jettisoned across the pond earlier this year. The New York Times described Welsh host Steve Jones as "utterly irrelevant", while the Boston Herald said he "is so far in the background, he might as well be on another network".
The comments came after a recent interview with Piers Morgan, in which Cowell said that Cole looked "a bit bewildered" on the judging panel.
He told Morgan: "Not everyone's like you Piers. You come to a country like America, it's a big deal - it takes a while to adjust and I took the view along with a few other people that she would be more comfortable back in the UK."
