The top 8 singers took on the songs of the 80s last night on American Idol season 11. To help the pack on their way, resident music mentor Jimmy Iovine was joined by two members of No Doubt, Tony Kanal and the perfect creature that is Gwen Stefani. Sure, we could furrow our brows at the selection and make a case for why Gwen and Tony would have been better guest mentor matches for 90s night, but, hello! Gwen Stefani is on our TV screens and we shall not complain.
Anyways! The night was pretty good. Not as many standing Os were handed out by Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez as last week, but there were a few great performances given by the usual suspects: Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez, and Phillip Phillips. But Skylar Laine? OH EM GEE!!!!!!! She closed the show and stole the show!
There were a couple let-downs, too. Read our rundown to see how it all went.
DeAndre Brackensick – I Like It: Deandre is really finding his way and his voice. His take on DeBarge’s tune was yet another altogether great performance. He didn’t rely as heavily on his falsetto and gave us more of his full voice. And we didn’t just like it, we loved it. “I like it. I like it a lot!” Jennifer said. “Totally captivating,” Steven said. “It was perfect,” Randy said.
Colton Dixon – Time After Time: Colton is a mixed bag of awesomeness. Whether he’s sitting at the piano and belting out Billy Joel, standing still while crooner Christian rock, or spicing up a Cyndi Lauper classic and totally rocking its socks off like he did last night, he gives us a new piece of himself every week. That’s why we adore him! He’s also freakin’ cute, but that’s besides the point. Promise. “You’ve got one of those voices that’s so good, you could do a record right now,” Steven said. “I really liked it,” added Jennifer. “You’re so current…Steven’s right. You’re ready to go,” Randy said.
Skylar Laine – Wind Beneath My Wings: Talk about saving the best for last. Skylar was originally going to sing Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” but after blowing Jimmy and Gwen away in rehearsals with Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings,” she made the choice to change her song. And was it ever the right choice. Skylar finally had her “moment.” Everything about the performance was outstanding. From the diva hair, to the beautiful dress, to her letting the song quietly build up until her vocals and emotion exploded at the end. It was perfection! Much deserved standing O! “I think this was your best performance on the show,” Randy said. “Unbelievable!” “You just told them you can sing with the best of everybody who’s here, and you can,” Jennifer said. Steven closed the praise session off by saying, “That’s the best song you could have picked for your voice and the end of the night. That’s the beginning of a beautiful career, girl. That was just so fine.”
