Derrick Rose ACL Knee Injury - 4/28/2012 2012 NBA Playoffs Game 1

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Saturday.

Rose suffered the injury while trying to leap off his left foot in the lane with 1:22 left in Saturday's playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rose was helped off the court before the Bulls sealed their 103-91 Game 1 win. Rose had 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists when he was injured.

Team medical personnel immediately rushed out and tended to Rose for several minutes as he was writhing in pain near the baseline before helping him to the locker room. Rose was taken to the hospital, where MRI results confirmed the Bulls' worst fears.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was asked about his philosophy of keeping his top players in late-game situations when the outcome is not in doubt. It's been a recurrent line of questioning for Thibodeau, especially concerning Rose, who has battled several injuries.Rose crumbled to the ground after he drove the lane with about 1:20 left and the Bulls leading by 12. He was going for a layup when he came to a jump-stop and seemed to change his mind as the 76ers' Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen rotated over, passing off to a teammate before an awkward landing.

Team medical personnel immediately rushed out and tended to Rose for several minutes as he was writhing in pain near the baseline before helping him to the locker room. Rose was taken to the hospital, where MRI results confirmed the Bulls' worst fears.

ARMANDS ŠKELE IMPOSSIBLE SHOT

Byron Eaton's epic shot may not have made the difference during that t triple OT battle between Texas and Oklahoma State but it was certainly the one highlight stood out the most. With the shot clock winding down and the ball bouncing its way out of bounds, Oklahoma State's Eaton ran it down and put up a shot as he was falling down. Swish. The shot was so improbable that some dubbed it the "Miracle Shot."

It may have taken a few years, but Eaton's shot was just one-upped. In the final minutes of the Estonian League semifinal playoff match between Kalev/Cramo and Tarvas, 28-year-old Armands Skele of Kalev chased after a ball on its way out of bounds and tried to keep it in play. Not only did he manage to save it and avoid a team turnover, he launched it toward the hoop with his back to the basket. As he was falling out of bounds, the ball was dropping through the net. Swish!

Pep Guardiola to end reign as Barcelona coach in summer

Pep Guardiola will stand down as Barcelona manager at the end of the season after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.
The 41-year-old, who was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies, will be succeeded by current assistant Tito Vilanova.
Barca look set to miss out to Real Madrid in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.
"The reason is simple: four years is enough," said Guardiola.
"I'm drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong." Guardiola is the most successful coach in Barca history, with three league titles, two Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey among his haul.
He has overseen the rise of three-time world player of the year Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, while signing Fabregas from Arsenal.
Guardiola was particularly close to Messi - describing him as "the best ever" player - while the Argentina forward suggested Guardiola was the main factor behind Barca's recent success.
Messi was one of the players who opted to stay away from Guardiola's news conference.
Instead he posted a message on his Facebook page and stated he felt too much emotion to face the media glare.
Because of the emotions I feel I preferred not to be present at Pep's press conference and to stay away from the press because I know they will look for the pain on the players' faces," said Messi.
"It is something I decided not to show."

Gideon Sundback celebrated in a Google doodle

Google's latest doodle, a giant zipper running down the centre of the search engine's homepage, marks the birthday of Gideon Sundback, the Swedish-American electrical engineer most commonly associated with the development of the fastening device that revolutionised the clothing industry.

Before Sundback's intervention, the idea for a fastener based on interlocking teeth had circulated among engineers for more than 20 years but no one had perfected it.

His innovation was to place a dimple on the underside of each tooth and a nib on the top that would sit securely within the dimple of the tooth above it.

As a result, the join between two rows of teeth was then strong because no single tooth has enough room to move up or down and come apart. He also created the manufacturing machine for the new zipper.

Born on April 24, 1880, in Småland, Sweden, he moved to Germany following his studies and emigrated in 1905 to the US, where he started to work at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A year later, he was hired to work for the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey, and became its head designer in 1909.

Sundback initially proposed the new zipper as a replacement for hook-and-eye fasteners on women's boots but it had become a regular feature for the flies of trousers and on dresses by the 1930s.

Van Persie wins PFA award

London - Arsenal striker Robin van Persie was named the Player of the Year by England's Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) at a ceremony on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Dutch international has scored 27 Premier League goals so far this season - his best return for the north London club - and was proud to be honoured by a poll of top-flight players.

"If other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it," he said.

"It is very special because you are playing against them week in week out and every single player does everything to win and in the end if they make up their minds that I'm the best player it is a big honour."

Van Persie added none of his success would be possible but for the contribution of his fellow Gunners.

"Without them I could not have achieved it," he said. "For example Theo Walcott, he has given me more than 12 assists and I do really appreciate that."

Van Persie was originally deployed as a second striker by Arsenal after signing from Feyenoord in 2004 in a role made famous by fellow Dutch forward Dennis Bergkamp during his time with the club.

But despite his own initial doubts, van Persie has relished the role of leading Arsenal's attack since being switched to the centre forward position by manager Arsene Wenger.

"Now I am (confident). To be fair, when I first went there I wasn't really as confident and I wasn't really sure I could do it. It took a bit of time but after a couple of months a slowly realised I could do a good job there."

"If you look at the people I was in with then it is a great honour to get the award and hopefully there is more to come.

Both Walker and van Persie were included in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Year, which featured four players from title-chasing Manchester City.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart, defender Vincent Kompany and midfielders Yaya Toure and David Silva all featured in a side where Wayne Rooney was the only representative from champions Manchester United.

Tottenham had three men in the team, with Scott Parker and Wales winger Gareth Bale, last year's PFA Player of the Year, joining Walker in a side without any players from Chelsea, the only English club to reach the semi-finals of this season's Champions League.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Manchester United Vs Everton (4-4), Premier League 2012

Man United V Everton, April 2012: Video, highlights, as-it-happens commentary… Hello and welcome to Old Trafford where we have United facing Everton – a win here will be a massive step toward yet another title. But you have Everton in great form. Put aside the recent loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi, they are playing out of their skins. A classic encounter? More than ever!

47 mins: First period of attack going to Everton. a long-range free kick is flicked for a corner. It's bent in and this time it's Ferdinand to flicks it away. Neville setting up for a long throw... straight to united.

Second half underway - perfectly balanced. no changes to the line ups and so far it's Rooney and Jelavic with the goals.

HALFTIME 0-0

48 mins: Great ball in and Scholes gets a get to it, bouces about a bit and then Welbeck heads just wide. Video up soon.

47 mins: Distan done for a foul for pushing Rooney off the ball but it was shoulder-to-shoulder surely. Oh, a card too. Harsh.

42 mins: Nani now having a shot on goal. It seems that United have just kicked into another gear.

40 mins: Wayne Rooney scores! Video up. Rooney was on hand against his old club to score his 33rd goal for the season and 179th for the club, equal fourth all-time goalscorer for Manchester United with George Best and Dennis Viollet. Evra laid it down the line to Nani who checked back on his right boot and bent one in towards the goal, Wayne Rooney first to it with a glancing header past Howard in the Everton net.

34 mins: Scholes smashes a cleared header from a corner and it takes a wicked deflection with Howard adjusting just in time and hanging o to it. Video up.

33 mins: GOAL Everton! Jelavic gets his head to it at the back post and lobs it over de Gea giving him no chance. Video up.

31 mins: The efforts on Howard's goal are increasing in number if not quality. Video up of another one from Nani.

30 mins: Gibson with a mile of room outside the United penalty area and he accepts the invitation to shot and it's not a bad effort. Video up.

29 mins: A sweet turn from Rooney gets his around Jagielka and United moving in the right direction... he lays off to Nani but it gets trapped under his feet and the play breaks down.

27 mins: Great wee triangles from Everton and Ferdinand calls on all his experience to clear for a corner under pressure from Jelavic. Everton's first corner and de Gea shouts for it but doesn't get there... lucky it fell to a United player.

24 mins: First corner of the match to United but Wayne Rooney bends one right into the hands of the keeper Howard.

22 mins: United now streaming forward and it was Welbeck that took the ball away from Jagielka beautifully and in one fluid motion but his shot is covered by the defender.

19 mins: Neville sets up for a long throw and then goes short, back to Neville and he delivers with Valencia just doing enough to force Distin's header off target.

16 mins: Everton give Scholes some room from distance and they will do that at their peril... he positions the ball with a couple of touches and then lets fly. Video up.

14 mins: Rooney does well to get above Jagielka but can't get his header on target.

12 mins: Valencia bending a cross away from goal to the edge of the box but it's a tad behind Rooney and finds Nani loose at the back, one touch, a push to the right and he tries to bend one into the bottom corner, but wide. Then Nani finds half a yard of room in a similar position and cracks another one straight at Howard. Video up of both shots.

7 mins: Geez this is a real 'unlike United' start for united. passes being wellied into touch by yards, short balls going to opposition players... and because of it the 50:50s are falling for the men in blue too. Everton are pressing the game.

4 mins: A couple of stray passes from the usually precise United so far. Jelavic makes a great diagonal run and Osman finds him, he shoots as he's running on the angle and De Gea is forced into action. Video up. It's been mostly Everton.

2 mins: Casual start to the match until Everton's Pienaar plays the ball into Osman and he shoots, blocked by Ferdinand and he climbs again to head wide.

Everton on the ball... and we're underway...

Sir Alex applauds the crowd and we're nearly there folks... kick off...

Here are the official teams...

Man Utd (4-4-1-1): De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, Nani; Rooney; Welbeck. Subs: Amos, Jones, Smalling, Park, Giggs, Young, Hernandez.

Everton (4-2-3-1): Howard; Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Neville; Heitinga, Fellaini; Osman, Gibson, Pienaar; Jelavic. Subs: Mucha, Barkley, Cahill, Stracqualursi, Anichebe, McFadden, Gueye.

What a day we have ahead of us, first Manchester United v Everton, then manchester City v Wolves. Will the Premiership title race take a giant leap forward at the end of today?

Kick off is not far away so in the meantime watch highlight and all goals as Man U thrash Aston villa 4-4

Kings Shock Canucks: Los Angeles Advances To 2nd Round After OT Goal From Jarett Stoll (VIDEO)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Jarret Stoll beat Cory Schneider with a wrist shot at 4:27 of overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 2-1 victory over Vancouver on Sunday night, knocking out the top-seeded Canucks in five games in the Western Conference first-round series.

Stoll scored from the left wing after a turnover at Vancouver blue line. The forward skated in on a 2-on-1, but took the shot himself, picking the top-left corner above Schneider's blocker.

Brad Richardson tied it for Los Angeles at 3:21 of the third period, and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves.

Henrik Sedin opened the scoring for Vancouver with a power-play goal in the first period.

Schneider made 35 saves in his third straight start after Roberto Luongo lost the first two games.

The Kings will play the second-seeded St. Louis Blues in the second round.

The Canucks dropped out in the first round after leading the NHL in regular-season points for the second straight year. Last season, they lost to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Vancouver's new second line of Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and Max Lapierre made a quick impression. Burrows fed Kesler from behind the net about a 90 seconds in, but Quick stopped the center's shot from the slot.

The Canucks then ran into early penalty trouble and didn't get another shot for 6 minutes before Lapierre put one on Quick. Vancouver killed penalties to Dan Hamhuis and Sedin, but couldn't get its power play going on its first advantage.

Later, Schneider robbed Richards on a rebound, snaring the puck with his catching glove. With just over 2 minutes left in the second, Quick stymied Daniel Sedin on a breakaway, lowering his right pad to block a snap shot. Sedin slammed his stick against the glass in frustration as he went to the bench.

Richardson drew the Kings even in the third, tapping in a pass from Drew Doughty. Doughty deked and circled around the Canucks' Keith Ballard and passed the puck back to Richardson from the end line. It was the first goal of the series for Richardson, who missed the first three games while recovering from an appendectomy.

Notes: The Canucks made just one lineup change, inserting winger Dale Weise in place of Zack Kassian, who was the principal acquisition in the trade that sent Cody Hodgson to Buffalo at the Feb. 27 deadline. ... Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo played his 100th career playoff game.

Louis Oosthuizen Sinks Double Eagle At Masters, Gets A Piece Of History (VIDEO)

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Even if he doesn't have a place in the champion's locker room at the Masters, Louis Oosthuizen can say he has a spot in the Albatross Club with Gene Sarazen.

Not a bad consolation prize: That shot by "The Squire" in 1935, after all, is widely credited with putting the Masters on the map.

Back then players weren't routinely hitting the ball so far, but Sarazen had the pluck to pull out a 4-wood from 235 yards and blast the ball over the creek that guards the 15th green at Augusta National. He made double-eagle, otherwise known as an albatross. It erased a three-shot deficit to Craig Wood in one swing. The two went to a playoff that Sarazen won.

On Sunday, Oosthuizen also got to the playoff on the strength of his double-eagle but he didn't make any more history.

Bubba Watson pulled off The Shot of the tournament – that twister from nowhere on the 10th hole in the playoff – and Oosthuizen walked home not with the green jacket, but with a good-looking `2' on the scorecard. It was only the fourth double-eagle in the history of the Masters and the first ever on the par-5 second at Augusta National.

Oosthuizen raised his hands, high-fived his caddie.

Watson, who was playing in the same group, told Oosthuizen he wanted to high-five him too, "but felt it might not have gone over too well," Oosthuizen said.

Oosthuizen's albatross now ranks No. 2 on the list of four that have come at Augusta National – ahead of Bruce Devlin's in 1967 on No. 8 and Jeff Maggert's in 1994 on No. 13, but still one notch behind Sarazen's. Had The Squire not made that shot, the historians say there's no telling where the Masters would be today.

American Idol Recap: Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet Soar During Top 8′s 80s Theme Night

The top 8 singers took on the songs of the 80s last night on American Idol season 11. To help the pack on their way, resident music mentor Jimmy Iovine was joined by two members of No Doubt, Tony Kanal and the perfect creature that is Gwen Stefani. Sure, we could furrow our brows at the selection and make a case for why Gwen and Tony would have been better guest mentor matches for 90s night, but, hello! Gwen Stefani is on our TV screens and we shall not complain.

Anyways! The night was pretty good. Not as many standing Os were handed out by Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez as last week, but there were a few great performances given by the usual suspects: Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez, and Phillip Phillips. But Skylar Laine? OH EM GEE!!!!!!! She closed the show and stole the show!

There were a couple let-downs, too. Read our rundown to see how it all went.

DeAndre Brackensick – I Like It: Deandre is really finding his way and his voice. His take on DeBarge’s tune was yet another altogether great performance. He didn’t rely as heavily on his falsetto and gave us more of his full voice. And we didn’t just like it, we loved it. “I like it. I like it a lot!” Jennifer said. “Totally captivating,” Steven said. “It was perfect,” Randy said.

Colton Dixon – Time After Time: Colton is a mixed bag of awesomeness. Whether he’s sitting at the piano and belting out Billy Joel, standing still while crooner Christian rock, or spicing up a Cyndi Lauper classic and totally rocking its socks off like he did last night, he gives us a new piece of himself every week. That’s why we adore him! He’s also freakin’ cute, but that’s besides the point. Promise. “You’ve got one of those voices that’s so good, you could do a record right now,” Steven said. “I really liked it,” added Jennifer. “You’re so current…Steven’s right. You’re ready to go,” Randy said.

Skylar Laine – Wind Beneath My Wings: Talk about saving the best for last. Skylar was originally going to sing Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” but after blowing Jimmy and Gwen away in rehearsals with Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings,” she made the choice to change her song. And was it ever the right choice. Skylar finally had her “moment.” Everything about the performance was outstanding. From the diva hair, to the beautiful dress, to her letting the song quietly build up until her vocals and emotion exploded at the end. It was perfection! Much deserved standing O! “I think this was your best performance on the show,” Randy said. “Unbelievable!” “You just told them you can sing with the best of everybody who’s here, and you can,” Jennifer said. Steven closed the praise session off by saying, “That’s the best song you could have picked for your voice and the end of the night. That’s the beginning of a beautiful career, girl. That was just so fine.”

Yuba City JV Baseball Team fights with Del Campo team

An ugly brawl broke out during a high school baseball game between Yuba City High JV and Del Campo. The wild melee in Carmichael, California has sparked an investigation by the officials of the San Juan Unified School District and Yuba City High School.

A person sitting on the Del Campo side of the diamond managed to film the fight and posted the video (seen below) to YouTube.

The clip begins with several players from Yuba City High charging across the infield toward first base. The Yuba City High players appeared to outnumber their Del Campo opponents. The fracas didn't stop until coaches from both sides, umpires and even some parents ran out to separate the fighting high school athletes.

News 10 reports that Del Campo coach Alan Case said that his players were "attacked" by Yuba City High. Watch News 10 video above.

According to Appeal-Democrat, both teams had been "jawing" at each other throughout the game until the fight erupted in the sixth inning. Bryan DeMain of the Appeal-Democrat cites a source who believes the fight kicked off "after the Del Campo first base coach made comments to the Yuba City dugout and pitcher Jaylon Deas."

Barcelona 3-1 AC Milan (3-1 agg) Full Goals & Highlights

Lionel Messi was Barcelona's hero yet again as his two first-half penalties sealed a Champions League quarter-final win over AC Milan.

Messi, 24, moved into third on the list of all-time goalscorers in the competition as Barca set up a last-four place against Benfica or Chelsea.

Milan were briefly level when midfielder Antonio Nocerino steered in Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pass.

But they had no answer after the break with Andres Iniesta adding a third.

No side has ever retained the trophy in the Champions League era but Pep Guardiola's side must be outstanding favourites to achieve the feat in Munich on 19 May.

Messi inspired them to beat Manchester United in last year's final at Wembley, and the Argentine's incredible goalscoring form could steer the club to another title this year.

Barely a week seems to go by without Messi adding another record to his collection, and he quickly chalked up two more to his ever-growing list of personal achievements with his 57th and 58th goals of a remarkable season. But the Italians failed to build on that goal and Barcelona were back ahead before the break as Alessandro Nesta gave away another cheap penalty.

The vastly experienced defender needlessly grabbed hold of Sergio Busquets inside the area, and Messi struck the ball into the opposite corner.

Messi was instrumental in the third goal as well, and when his low shot struck Mexes to land at Iniesta's feet, the midfielder calmly took a touch before rifling past Christian Abbiati.

That goal crushed Milan's spirit, and the match desended into an exhibition as Barca booked their place in the semi-finals for a fifth successive year.

With Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid still in the mix and a potent Bayern Munich side looking to win the cup on their own ground, Barcelona still face several considerable hurdles before they can lift the trophy again, but Guardiola's men undoubtedly remain the side to beat.

kentucky wildcats beats kansas jayhawks in national championship game 67-59 highlights 4/2/12

NEW ORLEANS — No matter where Anthony Davis and his buddies go to make their millions, their ol' Kentucky home will long remember this championship season.

The Wildcats hit the jackpot with their lottery picks Monday night, ignoring Davis' bad shooting night and parlaying a roster full of NBA talent into a 67-59 victory over Kansas for the team's eighth national title – and its first since 1998.

The one-and-doners did it in a wire-to-wire victory – a little dicey at the end – to cap a season in which anything less than bringing a title back to the Bluegrass State would have been a downer. They led coach John Calipari to his first title in four trips to the Final Four with three different schools.

Doron Lamb, a sophomore with first-round-draft-pick possibilities, led the Wildcats (38-2) with 22 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers that put them up by 16 with 10 minutes left.

The Jayhawks (32-7), kings of the comeback all season, fought to the finish and trimmed that deficit to five with 1:37 left. But Kentucky made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win

Davis' fellow lottery prospect, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, was another headliner, creating space for himself to score all 11 of his points in the first half.

Davis, meanwhile, might have had the most dominating six-point night in the history of college basketball. He finished with 16 rebounds, six blocks, five assists and three steals – and made his only field goal with 5:13 left in the game. It was a surefire illustration of how the 6-foot-10 freshman can exert his will on a game even on a rare night when the shot isn't falling.Normally, the prospect of losing all those players in one swoop would have people thinking about a tough rebuilding year.

But Cal has mastered the art of rebuilding on the fly.

He's the coach who brings in the John Walls, Brandon Knights and Derrick Roses (at Memphis) for cups of coffee, lets them sharpen up their resumes, then happily says goodbye when it becomes obvious there's nothing left for them to do in school.

The coach won't apologize for the way he recruits or how he runs his program. Just playing by the rules as they're set up, he says, even if he doesn't totally agree with them. Because he refuses to promise minutes or shots to any recruit and demands teamwork out of all of them, he says he comes by these players honestly.

He has produced nine first-round picks in the last four drafts with a few more coming. This latest group will have an NCAA title in tow and the everlasting love of a fan base that bleeds basketball.

Greek far right politician slaps opposition on live TV

ATHENS, Greece — Greece's election campaign turned ugly Thursday on live TV: The spokesman of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party, after trading insults of "commie" and "fascist," lunged at two female left-wing politicians on a mainstream morning talk show, throwing water at one and smacking the other three times across the face.

The violent display reminiscent of trash TV, a week and a half ahead of crucial elections, stunned Greeks as they seek to avoid a catastrophic exit from Europe's common euro currency. A prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Ilias Kasidiaris, whose party alarmed Europe by gaining 21 of Parliament's 300 seats in Greece's inconclusive May 6 elections.

Golden Dawn, which vehemently denies the neo-Nazi label, has been accused of violent attacks against immigrants in Athens. The party denies involvement in the attacks, insisting it is a nationalist patriotic group. It campaigned on a platform of ridding the country of illegal immigrants and cleaning up crime-ridden neighborhoods, and advocates planting anti-personnel mines along Greece's borders to stop migrants from sneaking across.

The attack "put on public display what was widely known," said the radical left-wing Syriza party, whose member Rena Dourou was splashed with water on the show. "The true face of this criminal organization."

Tempers frayed on the daily morning political show on the private Antenna television station during a political debate, to which representatives of all seven parties that won parliamentary seats on May 6 had been invited.

Discussion had turned to the country's natural resources. But it went off on a tangent about political history in Greece, which suffered a vicious civil war between Communists and the right-wing after World War II, and a seven-year military dictatorship that ended in 1974.His burst of aggression during the TV debate followed a reference by SYRIZA's Dourou to his forthcoming trial.

"I call on all Greeks to defend our history and shut our ears to those selling cheap nationalism," Dourou told reporters.

The Greek presidency, the government and political rivals were quick to condemn the assault, and some urged Golden Dawn supporters to abandon the party.

"We are urging citizens who voted for Golden Dawn to reconsider," said Fofi Gennimata, a spokeswoman for the Socialist PASOK party. No PASOK representatives will take part in future TV debates with Golden Dawn members, she said.

The president's office said the assault was an affront to democracy. "We will not tolerate the violation of democratic rules..." it said in a statement.

Siberia Plane Crash: Russian Aircraft Carrying 43 Passengers Crashes, Killing At Least 29

MOSCOW, April 2 (Reuters) - At least 29 people were killed and 14 were rescued alive from a plane crash in Siberia, Russia's state-run Itar-Tass news agency said on Monday, citing a regional Emergency Situations Ministry official.

The ATR 72, a twin-engine, turbo-prop plane, with 43 people aboard, crashed some 30-35 km (18-22 miles) from the western Siberian city of Tyumen, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.

The mid-range plane belonging to Russian airline UTair crashed after taking off from Tyumen on a flight to Surgut, an oil town further north in Siberia.

There were 39 passengers and four crew on board, according to preliminary information, Andrianova said.

Injured survivors were flown to hospital by helicopter after t he plane caught fire following the crash, the cause of which was not immediately known, Russian news agencies reported.

At least five survivors were in critical condition, state-run RIA news agency reported, citing hospital officials in Tyumen, some 1,720 km (1,070 miles) east of Moscow.

UTair has three ATR-72 craft made by the French-Italian manufacturer ATR, according to the airline's website.

The crash was the deadliest air disaster in Russia since a Yak-42 plane crashed into a riverbank near the city of Yaroslavl after takeoff on Sept. 7, 2011, killing 44 people and wiping out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team.

President Dmitry Medvedev called for a reduction in the number of Russian airlines and improvements in crew training after that crash, which followed a June crash that killed 47 people including a navigator who had been drinking.

Celtic vs St Johnstone 2-0 1st April 2012

CELTIC inched closer to sealing the SPL title after a victory over St Johnstone that came amid tributes to former player Stilyan Petrov, who yesterday announced he had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

.

Celtic players, staff and fans wore shirts emblazoned with the Aston Villa midfielder’s name and shirt number.

If the tributes to Petrov were an expression of the club’s solidarity, then the same could be said of St Johnstone’s rearguard for much of the first half.

Celtic struggled to break down a well-organised Saints side, but a Georgios Samaras header and an own goal by midfielder Chris Millar after the break saw off the visitors, whose striker Cillian Sheridan missed a great chance with the game goalless.

It was not a vintage Celtic performance, who were perhaps a bit deflated by Rangers’ win at Motherwell yesterday which prevented a possible title party today.

However, that will not worry Hoops boss Neil Lennon, whose side need only a draw at Kilmarnock next Saturday to be crowned champions.Saints midfielder Chris Millar took possession wide on the right and played in right-back Dave Mackay, who sent a great cross into the box only for Sheridan to somehow miss the target from six yards.

Moments later Sandaza rose highest in the Hoops box to head Craig’s whipped-in free-kick looping over the bar.

Matthews replaced Lustig in the 55th minute before Ki came on for Stokes and, in between the two substitutions, Mannus tipped a cross-cum-shot from Commons over the bar as the hosts exerted some pressure.

Samaras won the free-kick which led to his opener in the 66th minute when Saints defender David McCracken fouled him 35 yards out in his frustration to get the ball off the Greece striker. Commons flighted the ball to the back post, where Samaras climbed to head back across goal and past Mannus.

The points were sealed four minutes later, with the Saints bench still complaining about a hefty tackle on Craig by Commons, who played on.

Celtic swept up the park and, when Ki played in Samaras down the right, he drove a low cross into the box which was deflected into his own net by Millar.

Saints shrugged off their rage to try to rescue something from the game and in the 83rd minute Forster made a fine save from Craig’s 25-yard free-kick, stretching to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

Craig then blasted over the bar from close range after Forster had parried a Sandaza cross right to his feet, summing up a frustrating day for the McDiarmid Park midfielder.

In the final seconds of normal time, after Wright had clattered Commons 25 yards from goal, Mulgrew drew a good save from Mannus with his curling free-kick.

Kids Choice Awards 2012: Full List of Winners & Slime Victims

So said host Will Smith at Nickelodeon's 25th annual Kids' Choice Awards Saturday night. Specifically, Justin Bieber, Halle Berry, Chris Colfer and Taylor Lautner.

Berry received the infamous green blast in her seat, Glee star Colfer was caught off guard while presenting, and Lautner got his on the podium.

Justin Bieber's slime treatment closed out the big show - and narrowly missed First Lady Michelle Obama, was on hand to present Taylor Swift with the Big Help Award.

Obama's two daughters Sasha and Malia also managed to dodge the slime at the event (phew!), which honored Selena Gomez (above) Tim Tebow, LMFAO and more.

Yes, Tim Tebow got an award. Don't even bother to ask why. Just enjoy.
